Happy 4th Wedding Anniversary!

Today is our anniversary! Happy 4th wedding anniversary to my husband, my best friend!

Since the traditional 4th anniversary present is supposed to be fruit and flowers, this is what is waiting for my husband at home right now.

It's a wine sampler basket representing some of the places we have visited and some of the places we want to visit! There is some Alabama muscadine wine mixed in here too. I have never tried this type of wine but hopefully it will be good. There is also some good chocolate and a Snow Patrol CD with a cover that looks like it might have "flowers" on it? Check out the bottle that says "Monogamy" which I thought was cute.

I'm also going to sign us up for a wine tasting class but I have to figure out his schedule first (which is not easy)!

Hope he likes it!

Ladies, thanks so much for all the great suggestions for gift ideas! You girls are awesome!

Wedding Anniversary Time!

This week is our 4th wedding anniversary!!! Since it's on Thursday, we'll probably wait until the weekend to celebrate. I can't believe four years have passed since I said "forever" to the most wonderful man I could have ever imagined. It just doesn't seem like we've been married that long! We've been together for 7 years total. I still get butterflies when I see him. His hugs are still the most comforting thing in the world. His kisses still make me feel like I'm floating. He is everything I ever wanted. He still continues to surprise me with the amount of strength that one person can have inside of them. The sound of him laughing has to be the best thing I could ever hear. There is no one else in the world I would rather spend time with than him. I honestly don't know how I got so lucky to find him!

To all the married girls out there, what is your favorite wedding day memory?

Mine was the moment I saw Scott after the church doors were opened and I started walking down the aisle. When those doors opened, I remember seeing a mass of people. Our friends and families were filling up the church pews. The photographer was bombarding me with camera flashes and I was totally overwhelmed. Then, I looked down the aisle and saw Scott. My world went completely, peacefully still. It was like pausing and taking a deep, slow breath of cool air when you have been running in the heat and have forgotten to breathe for a few too many steps. Everything in my world went steady and right when I saw him that moment. He looked so handsome and happy. Our wedding day was perfect and every day since then has been a gift from God. I can't believe it's been 4 years!

I want to get him a perfect anniversary gift but I'm struggling with ideas this year!

Year 4 is supposed to be fruit and flowers... Seriously?! For a guy?!? What the heck can I get him that relates to fruit and flowers?!?

Year 1- Paper. I surprised him with a Doberman puppy who came with "papers" from the breeder. Sheba. The wonder dog.

Year 2- Cotton. We got a beautiful painting for the living room that was on canvas... made of cotton.

Year 3- Leather. I got him a Rossi .357 pistol in a leather holster. He loved his super manly anniversary gift.

Year 4- Fruit and Flowers?!? I have no idea!!!

Back from Barcelona!

We had an incredible trip to Barcelona! It was so nice to spend a week together with my husband. Traveling together is so much fun! I could have stayed another week and still would have felt like I had only seen a glimpse of the city. There is so much history to experience and an entirely different culture! The food, the narrow streets that wander around 700 year old buildings, and the architecture would have to be my top 3 favorite things about the city.

My top 10 random observations about Barcelona are:

1. Everyone seems much more relaxed there. Maybe it's due to the 3 hour lunch break for siestas?

2. The dogs are very well behaved! People walk across horribly busy intersections with their dogs off the leash- and The Dog Stays Beside Them! If Sheba would have been with us and off her leash, she would have been in France by the time we crossed the street!

3. Old Spanish people stay up LATE! Many times we were out past midnight and we saw more people using walkers on the street than you would see at a Andy Williams concert!

4. They love techno music. It sounded like we were in Abercrombie.

5. Nearly EVERYONE speaks English! Good news for us! Everyone that we met was super friendly and seemed pleased that we said "Hola, por favor, and gracias" in Spanish. It's amazing what being polite will do for you!

6. There are no grocery bags. Better bring a backpack with you if you go to a Barcelona grocery store. We saw a group of American college students who had loaded up on booze and chocolate who had arm loads of their "groceries". Hilarious! The booze was cheaper than water so I can't blame them! ;-)

7. The water tastes like butt. Oh, I drank it so I didn't get dehydrated, but it was funky! Of course they have bottled water, but that gets expensive so we drank from our own bottle when we out walking around town.

8. The coffee was amazing! So was the food. And the ice cream. And the pastries! Oh, the gluttony!

9. People try to sell you cans of beer on the street late at night. Too funny.

10. You want a fake prada purse, you can get one in Barcelona for 10 Euros!

Here are a few pics from the trip:

(This was the first view of the city from the plane. You can see the rocky Montserrat in the distance!)

We went to the top of Mount Tibidabo and saw the Sacred Heart (Sagrat Cor) church on top of the mountain. We could the outline of the church from downtown and it was quite majestic looking! There is a cable car that runs along the streets near the mountain but we never saw it. We just followed the cable car tracks up the side of the mountain and we were worn out when we got to the top. The walk was beautiful! We passed so many gorgeous homes that were all landscaped with colorful flowers. There were giant retaining walls beside the road and the flowers were everywhere! The entire walk up the mountain smelled like flowers. Then we took a little train car up the very steep side of the mountain to get to this church. The journey was SO worth it! The church was beautiful and we could see the whole city of Barcelona beneath us!

We walked around Miro Park and saw the colorful sculptures, flowers, and palm trees here. It's a very peaceful place where people play with their dogs, children play soccer, and some partake in an afternoon siesta!

Most of the people of Barcelona seem to be opposed to bull fighting. We heard that this was one of the first cities in Spain to work against banning the "sport" if you can call it that. They are remodeling the arena to be used for concerts and sporting events.

(the old bull fighting arena)

On top of Montjuic sits this building, the Palau Nacional. It was built for the World's Fair in 1929. Now it is the home of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. There is so much amazing art in this building! There is everything from Gothic style paintings from the 1300's to paintings by Picasso and Dali.

We loved all the crazy Antoni Gaudi architecture in Barcelona! That guy didn't seem to use a straight line on any of his buildings! His style made the buildings seem like a blurry, happy dream.

(Gaudi's La Pedrera)
The parks in Barcelona are so beautiful! This fountain was in the prettiest park I have ever seen in my life- the Parc de la Ciutadella. It was so peaceful and relaxing! I could've stayed at this park all week! It's HUGE! There are big trees everywhere that seem to block out the noise from the city and give shade from the sun. We sat next to a lake here and watched people in rowboats. We just held hands and sat in total peaceful silence. Paradise.

The Spanish copied the French, who copied the Romans.... so here is the Spanish Arc de Triumf. It was very pretty and the walkway in front of it is incredible! It's a huge open space lined with palm trees.

(Arc de Triumf)

The Waterfront area was completely transformed for the '92 Olympics and they demolished many industrial and apartment buildings to make beaches for the city. This was supposed to be a representation of the buildings that used to line the water. If they really looked like this, they probably needed to be cleared away!

(So many sailboats at Port Vell!)

The Sagrada Familia may have been my favorite church in Barcelona.... The Barcelona Cathedral was amazing but the facade was being renovated so it was covered in scaffolding. We toured other churches from the 1300's that were also incredible, but the Sagrada Familia is just beautiful! The interior of the Sagrada Familia was so light and colorful! I can only imagine how beautiful it will look when it is finally finished! They've been working on it since 1882! Gaudi was a busy guy around Barcelona!

Thanks for checking out the pictures and trip info! I would love to go back to Barcelona again!
We also did a day trip to Figueres but I will save that for another blog post!

Excited about travel and books!

Thanks for your sweet comments during my freak out this afternoon! Blog friends are awesome! I probably shouldn't type ANYTHING in the middle of stressing out, but it's very therapeutic. Plus, it helped me organize everything I need to do.

Everything is now under control for the trip.

The laundry is almost finished.

My husband likes my itinerary for the trip.
(I could sense some panic about the amount of things I have planned for us).

I could see him scanning the schedule for beach time.
(I took one of those facebook personality quizzes today and apparently I am Type A- who would've guess that!?!) By the way, there is definitely BEACH TIME on the schedule! :-)

I get to LEAVE WORK EARLY the day before the trip!!! My boss gave me permission to take care of last minute things and said I can leave when I am caught up at work! She can be cool sometimes (although she still terrifies me 98% of the time). I stayed a little late today to work and things are going well in the lab.

Snacks and cute little bottles of travel size items have been purchased. We always take water bottles and snacks to cut food costs on a trip. Plus, reusable water bottles are better for the environment, right? It seems to work well. We will splurge for a couple of nice dinners but will try to be reasonable with trip expenses. I'm the queen of budget travel. (When I was in grad school and had NO extra money, I managed to do a trip to London with some friends for $700.00. That included the plane ticket, 5 nights in the most disgusting hostel ever, and LOTS of free museums. We ate sandwiches from grocery stores and granola bars for nearly every meal. We had an incredible trip on a grad student budget!)

As for Friday night, the neighbors will be confined to clean areas of the house during their visit. If the house isn't perfect, oh well. Hopefully we can distract them with good food. The dogs may get febreezed instead of getting baths. I kid, I kid... kind of.

Tomorrow night is BOOK CLUB! We read My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and it was great. It was very thought provoking and I'm sure there will be a good discussion about the story.

So... QUESTION TIME!
What are your budget travel tips?
What are you reading right now?

Cue the freak out now.

I hope everyone is having a lovely week and enjoying nice weather!

This week, I have procrastinated as usual... which is leading to a full fledged freak out session in the next 2 days. The big Barcelona trip is coming up soon!!! I'm so excited but also completely stressed.

Have I done laundry? No.

Am I caught up at work? No... kind of.... I will be.

Is the house a wreck? Yes.

Did we schedule dinner with our neighbors at our house the night before we leave for a week? Yes.
(We are cooking dinner for them as thanks for feeding our dogs while we are gone... we will also get them a gift card as thanks).

Will we pack for the trip more than 4 hrs in advance before our flight leaves? Probably not.

Have I gone grocery shopping in the last two weeks? Not really.
(I ate popcorn and leftover chocolate cake for lunch yesterday- nutritious much?!)

Have I been to the bank to get Euros? No.
(The conversion rate sucks by the way- 1.4 dollars per ONE Euro. Sucks. A LOT.)

Have I planned out every detail of the trip? Yes... pending approval of the husband.
(I have a 4 page detailed itinerary. I should've been a travel agent instead of a scientist. This is what I have been doing every night instead of laundry, house cleaning, and going grocery shopping.)

Am I excited about trying all sorts of crazy Catalonian foods on the trip? YES!
(Paella with squid ink is at the top of the list! Hey, it's supposed to be really good!)

Now, back to work!
